Curriculum

Students are required to complete a total of 72 credits. Each course normally carries 6 credits.

The 72-credit requirement is distributed as follows:

Courses (60 credits):

Discipline Courses: At least 48 credits must be selected from discipline courses. This must include a minimum of 24 credits in stream-specific courses within the candidate’s corresponding stream of study.

Elective Courses: A maximum of 12 credits may be taken as elective courses.

Capstone Course (12 credits):

Candidates must successfully complete a 12-credit capstone course.

Mode and Period of Study

The curriculum shall normally extend over one academic year of full-time study or two academic years of part-time study. Students are not permitted to extend their studies beyond the maximum period of registration, which is two academic years of full-time study or three academic years of part-time study, unless otherwise permitted or required by the Board.

Admission and English Proficiency Requirements

To be eligible for admission to the programme, a candidate shall satisfy both the University Admissions Requirements including but not limited to:

(a) shall comply with the General Regulations;

(b) shall hold a Bachelor’s degree of this University or a qualification of equivalent standard from this University or another comparable institution accepted for this purpose;

(c) for a candidate who is seeking admission on the basis of a qualification from a university or comparable institution outside Hong Kong of which the language of teaching and/or examination is not English, shall satisfy the University English language requirement applicable to high degrees as prescribed under General Regulation G2(b).

(d) satisfy the examiners in a qualifying examination if required.

English Language Requirement

Applicants who hold a degree from a university or comparable institution outside Hong Kong where the language of teaching and /or examination was not English must satisfy the University English language requirement* for admission, unless they are granted an exceptional exemption.
Please note that the University’s TOEFL code is 9671.

Programme Fee

1. General / Cyber Security / Financial Computing / Multimedia Streams
The programme fee for 2026/27 intake is HK$240,000 (local students) and HK$334,800 (non-local students).
2. AI & Decentralized Technologies Stream
The programme fee for 2026/27 intake is HK$275,000 (local students) and HK$375,000 (non-local students).

Application

Applications should be submitted via the University’s online application system at https://portal.hku.hk/tpg-admissions/programme-listing?faculty=school-of-computing-and-data-science.
The application fee for the Taught Postgraduate Programme (TPG) at HKU is HK$600 per application.
When filing in the online application form, please provide a valid mailing address and email address to ensure the successful and confidential delivery of materials.
After paying the application fee and submitting the online application form, you will receive an email notification within approximately 5 working days. This email will provide instructions to log in to the TPG Online Admission System under the School of Computing and Data Science: https://tpgadmission.cds.hku.hk to upload the required supporting documents.
